The following is a summary of the topics discussed in the episode with approximate time stamps. The ideas are all paraphrased, to find exact quotes from the hosts and guest, please watch the full episode. SUMMARY 0:00 – 9:15 Opening quote … There’s a war that wages in every person, there is a part of us that wants to be lost and a part that wants to be found. It’s how we reconcile these two opposite parts that determines our success because the journey to greatness takes both connection and isolation. The start of all wellness journeys starts with the individual. It’s the struggle and he answers that come along from searching. Once you find the answers it is only natural to want to share those findings with the people around you. The path of wellness is one of empowerment and self-advocacy. The same can be said with the path of learning to be more effective in business. Struggles lead to searching which leads to answers. One of the most telling predicates of success in business is the ability to sell. Because everything in life is sales; selling yourself to your friends, the people you date, to the interview process etc. 9:16 – 17:30 As you travel further down the path of wellness, personal development and mindset level up as well. The constant inner drive to sell yourself on yourself. Part of that development is journaling. Stream of consciousness and calling out negative patterns to foster a greater sense of gratitude. By adding a review to your journaling you are better able to build your awareness on that which is holding you back. With that deeper understanding you create a wider perspective that changes the way you act and adjust. Leveling up in life can also lead to leveling up in sales and business. There is a lot of noise and confusion out there and the way through it is transparency. When you communicate from a place of authenticity and share the good and the bad you make real connections. Be real to make real connections. 17:31 – 26:19 Being a ‘self-cleaning oven’ means cleaning up your shit on a daily basis. In order to do that in an effective means, you must use curiosity. Rather than passively accept thoughts and self-imposed limits, use curiosity to delve deeper and question why. Self-compassion blends over to compassion for others. By taking responsibility for yourself you clean up after yourself and learn to prevent the messes that were caused by lack of understanding in the first place. A greater awareness brings to light the shadow parts of yourself. By bringing these darker parts to the surface we are able to learn about them from a curious standpoint and integrate them into our conscious being. “We don’t see the world as it is, we see the world as we are.” Again using that framework to heal and build more compassion for yourself and the world. By building these habits of awareness we make ourselves better and thus raise the totality of mankind, if only by one small measure. Another important step to take is to avoid your cell phone first thing upon waking. Plenty of distractions will make their way into your day and by avoiding your phone you make sure that you start your day with your attention placed on yourself. Clarity is one of the most important qualities to have and with it you can see the actions you can take to be responsible for your well-being. Although breaking that habit may be difficult at first, it becomes easier with practice. Challenge yourself and get curious to see how much more clearer you feel by pushing back cell phone use 1 hour after you wake. Place your focus on yourself and build that inner unity that is paramount for personal development. Along with that sense of balance, you build your emotional IQ. The more you engage with habit change and uncomfortable situations, the stronger you get. With that strength comes a greater character that is more apt to take action in the areas of your life that will help you to grow. Taking action around uncomfortable conversations will also aid your development. “Do not sweep anything up the rug.” Clear is kind. For on the other end of the difficult conversations there is growth and positive change. 26:20 – 36:00 Clear conversations allow you to find resolution. When you are direct and are able to bring everything into the light in an honest and respectful way you cannot help but grow emotionally. The key is to always communicate from a loving place, that way when it does get intense you can communicate to the person on the other end that this pain has a purpose. That purpose is to help them better deal with emotion in the future. By repeating this process enough times, it is possible to desire and even crave those conversations because the benefit far outweighs the initial pain involved. Plus, journaling is useful but there is nothing like being in the trenches and doing the actual work. Do the do! Through the active engagement, the actual actions of your journey you become more courageous and mature. The combination of courage and maturity increases your capacity to deal with critical feedback which will directly access the areas of life you can find the most growth in. The importance of having solid mentors cannot be overstated. They provide perspective, wisdom and the inspiration needed to navigate the never ending path of personal growth. A person with decades more life experience allows you to appeal to your higher self; your capacity to love in the face of rejection or even betrayal. Having that awareness of your shadow along with someone with a high emotional IQ will allow you to have compassion for those who treat you poorly. That is the fasted way to continue on your path without getting distracted by the emotions of those who have yet to mature. To operate with grace is to embrace the toughness and elegance required to think and act with a CEO mindset. 36:01 – 41:00 Being reactive vs. responsive. When you find yourself choosing to respond you level up. You avoid messy arguments and situations that cause nothing but negative emotion and confusion. You can represent your character and your business in a respectable way. You can remain consistent outside of how you feel. To have success requires stoicism and presence of mind. It may seem counterintuitive but one of the ways to be successful online is, drumroll please, to stay offline first thing in the morning. Online success is greatly aided with a sense of authenticity and by devoting time to yourself, you can better serve others. You must train yourself to use your phone or you shall find yourself being used by it. And once again, you cannot rely on your feelings to guide your work. Most of the time you won’t feel like doing what you're supposed to do. So cultivate a strong mind and never let your feelings dictate your actions. Online success requires that you show up, day after day, relying on your long term goals to fuel your actions. 41:00 – 51:00 Motion creates emotion, so when you move your body your mind will follow. Going on walks can have a tremendous effort on your inspiration. The more you practice it the easier it becomes. Discipline is doing what you know you need to do, especially when you don’t feel like doing it. Coming back to the idea that looking at your phone first thing upon waking, it takes discipline to break that habit. But when you do you realize that you have opened up prime mental ground for setting up a more product trajectory for your day. With more focus on yourself, you can better access and direct yourself into actions that create resolution. When you create those boundaries you can more easily figure out what you need and when you need it. You find balance; the times when you need to be alone, or socialize, or simply being around people without the need to socialize. By mixing up the environments you inhabit you find different sources of inspiration – for work, for self, and for your sense of community. When you trust yourself to figure out your own problems, everything becomes an opportunity to build your level of self-trust. 51:35 – 1:00:00 It is easy to get sucked into work, so using your body in a completely different way can help you maintain a sense of equilibrium. And to balance out of the masculine elements of non-stop work, tapping into your playfulness via dancing can be extremely effective. There is a flow and sense of fun that allows you to let go and release stress. Dance will bring you into a different community which provides a powerful, yet fun support system. Outside of self-judgment and goals, the ability to let loose can have a grounding and restorative effect on your well-being. Evolution Now; the meaning behind the title is to expand in the present moment urgently. To engage with the process of growth and to keep growing because every human being is an on-going project until the day they no longer walk this Earth.
